SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois learned with regret of the death of Doris J. Patterson on Friday, September 30, 2005; and

WHEREAS, She was born on March 23, 1938, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Otto Hurley and Cora Hart; she graduated from Roosevelt High School in Gary, Indiana, in 1956, with honors in academics, specializing in mathematics; she was also one of the top baton-twirling cheerleaders in the nation and majorette in Chicago's Bud Billiken parade; and

WHEREAS, During high school, she was an active member of the Universal Negro Improvement Association, French Club, and Girls Athletic Association; sewing was a hobby that she perfected to excellence and buying material was a habit that she refused to let go; in her spare time, she also enjoyed reading Harlequin Romance novels; and

WHEREAS, In 1957, she married Samuel McCarter, Sr., and he preceded her in death; seeking to improve the quality of life for her children, she moved from Missouri's Pruitt-Igo public housing project to the south side of Chicago; in 1966, she married Lonnie "Pat" Patterson, who also preceded her in death; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Patterson worked at Children's Memorial Hospital as a payroll supervisor for over 25 years; she retired and moved to Compton, California, and worked at Ralphs Grocery Company, an affiliate of The Kroger Co. grocer retail stores, as an accounts payable clerk until her retirement; and

WHEREAS, The passing of Doris J. Patterson has been deeply felt by many, especially her children, DiAna McCarter, Raymond (Faith) McCarter, Deborah (Robert) Hayes, Samuel A. McCarter, Cynthia E. Davis, and Angela (Darryl) Roberson-Taylor; her brother, Elvin Hurley; her 16 grandchildren; her eight great-grandchildren; her five nieces; and her many other relatives and friends; she was also preceded in death by her son, Richard C. McCarter; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Doris J. Patterson, and we extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to her family as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
