SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Judge Robert A. Cox of Winfield, formerly of Glen Ellyn, died May 11, 2005; and

WHEREAS, Judge Cox was born in Chicago and graduated from Steinmetz High School; he attended Carthage College in Wisconsin before transferring to Valparaiso University in Indiana, where he completed a bachelor's degree, and later received a law degree in 1958; and

WHEREAS, After law school, he worked for two years as an adjuster for State Farm Insurance Co. in Maywood; he began his legal career as the village attorney for Bloomingdale, a position he held for several years; in 1968, he began a private practice in Glen Ellyn, Cox & Lyle, with Delbert Lyle; in 1976, Judge Cox was appointed to the 18th Judicial Circuit Court in DuPage County, where he served until his retirement in 1992; and

WHEREAS, He served as the presiding judge for the Domestic Relations Division for four years and initiated mandatory collection of child support through the clerk's office, two years before it became a State requirement; he also started a mandatory conciliation program in cases involving child custody; and

WHEREAS, He was a no-nonsense type judge who took everyone and everything into consideration; he ran a tight ship and people respected him for that; and

WHEREAS, After retiring from the bench, he started a private practice in Wheaton, specializing in divorce, child custody, and mediation; and

WHEREAS, A Winfield resident since 1992, he was a member of Christ Church of Oak Brook, a past member and president of the Glen Ellyn Lions Club, and former Milton Township Republican committeeman; and

WHEREAS, Judge Robert A. Cox was the beloved husband of Debbie; the loving father of Ruth (Steven) McFarland, Julie (George) Michael, Robert Jr. (Mary) Cox, and Brigette Bucholz; the grandfather of William and Lauren Michael and Andrew Cox; the brother of Elizabeth Ingraham, Margaret Roberts, David (Jane) Cox, and the late Edward (Nancy Gates) Cox; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Judge Robert A. Cox and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and community; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to his family as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
