SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois learned with sadness of the death of Valerie Shavers of Chicago on April 26, 2005; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Shavers, also known as "Cakes" and "Val", was born in Chicago on June 13, 1962, to Mozell Shavers and Dan Delaney; she was the third of four children; and

WHEREAS, She attended Herzl Elementary School and Richard T. Crane High School; she worked a variety of jobs, and her most recent place of employment was at Wilma Rudolph Learning Center where she worked in Food Services; she always smiled when greeting people when she walked into the building and had a great love for her co-workers; and

WHEREAS, She opened her heart and shared whatever she had with anyone who needed assistance; her home was an open door to many who had no place to go; she cared about everyone, especially children; she loved life and lived it to the fullest; and

WHEREAS, The passing of Valerie Shavers was felt by all who knew and loved her, especially her husband, J.C. Halums; her children, James Shavers (Kimberley), Melanie Shavers, and Jerome Shavers; her mother, Mozell Shavers; her sisters, Valeda Shavers and Charnell Shavers (Edward); her brother, Daryl L. Shavers (Lucy); her grandchildren, Jamesha Shavers, Rashad Johnson, and Charles Montgomery; her father, Dan Delaney Jr.; her sisters and brothers, Valerie King (Thomas), Donna Delaney, Marsh Delaney, Jarvis Delaney, Ruth Mae Young, Patricia Delaney, and Ronald Delaney; her aunts and uncles, Katie Lindsey (Arthur), Velma Shavers (Robert), Ralph Shavers, Vernon Shavers (Alexandria), Mark Shavers (Yvonne), Delores Shavers, and Elnora Haralson (James); her godmother, Mrs. Mellow Beasly; her goddaughter, Yolanda Bryant; and a host of relatives and friends; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Valerie Shavers and extend our sincerest condolences to her family and friends; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to her family as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
