SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois learned with sadness of the death of William Arnold Ashby of Chicago on April 11, 2005; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Ashby was born on February 14, 1940, in Owensboro, Kentucky, to Horace Sr. and Helen (Bowles) Ashby; and

WHEREAS, He began his career in law enforcement as an Illinois county employee and actively served as a city employee for 33 years; he was a county sheriff, city investigator, bodyguard to Mayor Richard M. Daley and, most recently, Assistant Commissioner for the Department of Consumer Services - Public Vehicle Division; and

WHEREAS, He married Wilhelmena Mayfield on October 26, 1962; and

WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, John Price; and three sisters, Frieda Nelson, Dorothy Stewart, and Anna Marie Carter; and

WHEREAS, The passing of William Arnold Ashby is felt by all who knew and loved him, especially his wife, Wilhelmena; his daughters, Adrienne (Charles) Stone, Aleathea Wilson, Wilda Ashby, and Cynthia Shelton-Ashby; his sons, Leroy (Rosetta) House and Joseph (Melvlyn) House; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his sisters, Helen (Robert) Wingard, Audrey Carter, and Evelyn Williams; his brother, Horace Ashby Jr.; and his nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of William Arnold Ashby and extend our sincerest condolences to his family, friends, and community; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to his family as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
