HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Daniel P. O'Brien was born in 1924 in Cook County
3 Hospital; he started shining shoes on Chicago streets at the
4 age of 8 to help pay the rent with his mother as she raised 2
5 boys alone; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Because of his fighting abilities, Mr. O'Brien was
7 recruited by the Mercy Home to be a CYO boxer in a bantam
8 weight division; he was also recruited to the boxing team of
9 the USS Wakefield while serving in the Coast Guard during World
10 War II where he fought for the ship's championship, beating
11 Harold Schwartz; Mr. O'Brien has kept that fighting spirit
12 throughout his business career, becoming a successful
13 businessman in real estate, health care, and restaurants; and
 
14     WHEREAS, Mr. O'Brien returned to Chicago after the war and
15 took a job as a taxi driver; in 1979, he opened O'Briens
16 Sirloin Inn to friends, neighbors, conventioneers, and
17 politicians; throughout the years, Mr. O'Brien's unwavering
18 vision, business savvy, and fighting spirit contributed to the
19 prosperity of Old Town; he spends most of his time now at
20 O'Briens Restaurant at Whittaker Woods Golf Course in New
21 Buffalo, Michigan; and
 
22     WHEREAS, Still working after 7 decades, Mr. O'Brien has
23 become multi-oriented to his businesses comprising of
24 restaurant and lodging hospitality, commercial and residential
25 real estate, long-term care, golf course design, and the
26 establishment of a taxi service in New Buffalo; at a young 80
27 years old, the same spirit can be seen in Mr. O'Brien on a
28 daily basis; and
 
29     WHEREAS, His passions of his life begin at home; Mr.
30 O'Brien and his wife, Mary, have raised 6 children and have 16
31 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; therefore, be it

1     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
2 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
3 we congratulate Daniel O'Brien on being chosen as the Grand
4 Marshall of this year's St. Patrick's Day Parade in Chicago,
5 and on all of his life's acheivements; and be it further
 
6     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7 presented to Mr. O'Brien as an expression of our respect and
8 esteem.
