HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the State of Illinois congratulate the Village of Hillside on its 100th anniversary; and

WHEREAS, Established in 1905, Hillside is the "Hub of the Western Suburbs"; being located near numerous transportation and business opportunities, Hillside is a developing community of over 8,100 residents; the Village prides itself on community aesthetics and values and works to attract and maintain businesses in the community; and

WHEREAS, Hillside has been known as the town of Proviso, taken after the name of Proviso Township, the township in which it is located; in 1833, Frank Covell purchased land to build Hillside's first home; today, this land is known as the landfill along Mannheim Road; in 1905, Hillside became its own municipality with its incorporation on December 6; John Wolf was the first President of the Village, and 1919 saw the dedication of the first village hall, built on the site of today's village hall; and

WHEREAS, Hillside was selected in the mid-1950s as the site of the first large regional shopping center in the Chicago suburban area; opened in 1956, the Hillside Shopping Center has 67 stores, offering a variety of sales and services to the surrounding area; the original Butterfield Road business district was the first to thrive in the early community; and

WHEREAS, The Village of Hillside is a home rule unit of government that is proud of the relationships it maintains with the business community; the Village offers residents many opportunities throughout the community, whether it is for education, recreation, commerce, or location; and

WHEREAS, The mission of Hillside's economic development is to attract and promote the appropriate growth and expansion of retail, office, light industry, distribution, warehouse, and related businesses within the Village in order to strengthen the tax base and increase job opportunities for its residents; Hillside also serves the community by creating and fostering successful programs to retain and bolster existing business activities within the Village; and

WHEREAS, More than 200 companies comprise the industrial and business areas of Hillside, adding significantly to the progress, pride, and growth of the community; within easy access to highways, railroads, and O'Hare Airport, Hillside has attracted major light industry, professional and commercial business, and shopping centers; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the Village of Hillside on the occasion of its centennial anniversary; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Village of Hillside.
