HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Irma Delores Player Hall, an outstanding citizen
3 of the State of Illinois and an internationally acclaimed stage
4 and film actress, was born on June 3, 1935, in Beaumont, Texas;
5 and
 
6     WHEREAS, She worked as a teacher for several years, and
7 after retiring from teaching in 1984, she relocated to Chicago,
8 where she appeared in numerous stage productions, including her
9 own play "Gentle Fire"; she twice earned Chicago's most coveted
10 prize for drama, the Joseph Jefferson Award; and
 
11     WHEREAS, During the 1980s and 1990s, she also made a number
12 of appearances on national television shows, including a
13 Showtime production of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and "To Sir with
14 Love II", which aired on CBS; and
 
15     WHEREAS, Ms. Hall finally received her big break in acting
16 at age 60 in 1996, when she turned in an unforgettable
17 performance as Aunt T, an 80-year-old blind woman, in "A Family
18 Thing", a movie that also starred James Earl Jones and Robert
19 Duvall; and
 
20     WHEREAS, She went on to star in several films, including
21 "Collateral", "The Ladykillers", "Soul Food", and "Lesson
22 Before Dying"; she has appeared in over 50 films and television
23 shows; and
 
24     WHEREAS, As she has shown great courage in her recovery
25 from a serious automobile accident that occurred in January of
26 2004, Ms. Hall continues to receive honors for her remarkable
27 acting career, including a Career Achievement Award presented
28 at the 40th Chicago International Film Festival, a nomination
29 for this year's NAACP Image Award for Best Actress, and being
30 named DuSable Museum of Chicago's 2005 Black History Maker; and

1     WHEREAS, In honor of her many accomplishments, the Mayor
2 and City Council of the City of Chicago declared June 3, 2005,
3 to be Irma P. Hall Day throughout Chicago; the day will be
4 celebrated with a street dedication ceremony, a VIP reception,
5 and many more activities; therefore, be it
 
6     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
7 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
8 we congratulate Irma P. Hall on the occasion of her 70th
9 birthday and on having a day celebrated by the City of Chicago
10 in her honor; and be it further
 
11     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12 presented to Irma P. Hall as an expression of our respect and
13 esteem and with best wishes for all of her future endeavors.
