HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Indigency has been a persistent social problem
3 throughout history and has reached an intolerable level
4 throughout our country; and
 
5     WHEREAS, People in urban, suburban, and rural areas of
6 Illinois experience indigency, proving that it is not just a
7 big city problem; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Each year sees an increase in the number of deaths
9 among those who lack funds to provide the barest essentials of
10 life; and
 
11     WHEREAS, Bitter cold winters and extremely hot summers have
12 cost the lives of those individuals who simply could not afford
13 heating or air coolants and died from exposure; and
 
14      WHEREAS, In remembering those who have died, we must reach
15 out to help those in need; the extent to which our society can
16 counter the effects of indigency is a good measure of its
17 humaneness; and
 
18     WHEREAS, W. Earl Lewis served as Director of the Memorial
19 Ministry of Indigent Persons until his death and in his
20 capacity as Director, advocated for recognition of a day of
21 remembrance for indigent persons; and
 
22     WHEREAS, On May 25, 2005, the people of Chicago will gather
23 for the 20th Annual Interfaith Memorial Service for Indigent
24 People at the Chicago Temple/First United Methodist Church;
25 therefore, be it
 
26     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
27 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
28 we proclaim Wednesday, May, 25, 2005, as "We Remember, We Care

1 for Indigent Persons Day in Illinois", and that we urge all
2 citizens to observe, inform themselves of, and support efforts
3 to care for the indigent; and be it further
 
4     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5 presented to Rev. Larry Janezic, O.F.M., and to all of the
6 celebrants of "We Remember, We Care for Indigent Persons Day in
7 Illinois".
