HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Kelly Voigt, esteemed resident of Palatine and a
3 seventh grader at Plum Grove Junior High School, has achieved
4 national recognition for exemplary volunteer service by being
5 named one of the top two youth volunteers in Illinois for 2005
6 in the tenth annual Prudential Spirit of Community Awards; and
 
7     WHEREAS, These prestigious awards, presented by Prudential
8 Financial in partnership with the National Association of
9 Secondary School Principals, honor young volunteers across
10 America who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to
11 serving their communities; as a State Honoree, Ms. Voigt will
12 receive a $1,000 award, an engraved silver medallion, and a
13 trip to Washington, D.C., for a series of national recognition
14 events; and
 
15     WHEREAS, Ms. Voigt founded a nonprofit organization to
16 teach other children how to prevent dog bites; when she was 7
17 years old, a dog attack left Kelly with more than 100 stitches
18 on her face and throat, as well as lingering trauma and
19 depression; after her mother learned that dog bites are the
20 leading cause of injuries to children, they decided together to
21 find a way to teach kids how to be safe from dog bites; and
 
22     WHEREAS, Kelly collected information from the library, the
23 Internet, and insurance companies, and then designed a
24 presentation that kids would understand and remember; she
25 received permission to deliver her presentation at her school,
26 and soon began speaking at other schools, libraries, and Humane
27 Society and American Kennel Club locations, assisted by a
28 dog-handling professional and her therapy dog; Kelly has also
29 discussed her safety tips on national television programs, and
30 last May, she was a guest speaker in Washington, D.C., for
31 National Dog Bite Prevention Week; and

1     WHEREAS, The success of the State of Illinois, the strength
2 of our communities, and the overall vitality of American
3 society depends, in great measure, upon the dedication of young
4 people like Ms. Voigt who use their considerable talents and
5 resources to serve others; therefore, be it
 
6     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
7 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
8 we congratulate and honor Kelly Voigt for being a recipient of
9 a Prudential Spirit of Community Award, and we recognize her
10 outstanding record of volunteer service, peer leadership, and
11 community spirit; and be it further
 
12     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13 presented to Kelly Voigt as a token of our respect and esteem
14 and with our best wishes for her continued success and
15 happiness.
