HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The State of Illinois wishes to alert and educate
3 the citizens of this State of potential dangers in their
4 environment; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Radon is a colorless, odorless, tasteless, and
6 chemically inert radioactive gas that is naturally produced
7 from the breakdown of uranium; this gas is present in soil,
8 rock, and water; and
 
9     WHEREAS, The United States Surgeon General has warned that
10 radon is one of the leading causes of lung cancer in the United
11 States, second only to smoking; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Unlike carbon monoxide and many other home
13 pollutants, radon's adverse health effect, lung cancer, is
14 usually not produced immediately; a person may be exposed to
15 radon for many years without ever suspecting its presence in
16 the home; and
 
17     WHEREAS, Radon has been found in homes throughout Illinois,
18 particularly in central and northern Illinois; therefore, be it
 
19     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
20 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
21 we urge the residents of Illinois to purchase a low-cost radon
22 test kit or contact a licensed radon contractor to test their
23 homes for radon concentrations; and be it further
 
24     RESOLVED, That we urge school districts to help protect
25 their students and employees by having every school tested for
26 radon; and be it further
 
27     RESOLVED, That we urge licensed radon contractors and
28 residents who do self tests of their homes to report the

1 results of the radon testing to the Illinois Emergency
2 Management Agency so that accurate data may be maintained; and
3 be it further
 
4     RESOLVED, That we urge lending institutions to offer low
5 interest loans to home owners for the purpose of mitigating
6 excessive radon concentration levels.
