HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The State of Illinois wishes to alert and educate the citizens of this State of potential dangers in their environment; and

WHEREAS, Radon is a colorless, odorless, tasteless, and chemically inert radioactive gas that is naturally produced from the breakdown of uranium; this gas is present in soil, rock, and water; and

WHEREAS, The United States Surgeon General has warned that radon is one of the leading causes of lung cancer in the United States, second only to smoking; and

WHEREAS, Unlike carbon monoxide and many other home pollutants, radon's adverse health effect, lung cancer, is usually not produced immediately; a person may be exposed to radon for many years without ever suspecting its presence in the home; and

WHEREAS, Radon has been found in homes throughout Illinois, particularly in central and northern Illinois; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we urge the residents of Illinois to purchase a low-cost radon test kit or contact a licensed radon contractor to test their homes for radon concentrations; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we urge school districts to help protect their students and employees by having every school tested for radon; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we urge licensed radon contractors and residents who do self tests of their homes to report the results of the radon testing to the Illinois Emergency Management Agency so that accurate data may be maintained; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we urge lending institutions to offer low interest loans to home owners for the purpose of mitigating excessive radon concentration levels.
