HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The year 2006 marks the 150th anniversary of the
3 first Jo Daviess County Republican Convention; and
 
4     WHEREAS, The Republican Party had its beginning north of Jo
5 Daviess County in 1854 in a little schoolhouse at Ripon,
6 Wisconsin; the first Jo Daviess County Republican Convention
7 was held on August 23, 1856, with leaders from all over the
8 county present; and
 
9     WHEREAS, So many Jo Daviess County residents were showing
10 an interest in the Republican Party that leaders held a mass
11 meeting to determine the extent of interest; the Galena Gazette
12 reported that more than 5,000 persons attended the meeting on
13 September 10, 1856, at Warren; and
 
14     WHEREAS, From the very beginning, the Jo Daviess County
15 Republicans sought and gained the support of all segments of
16 the people, including miners, farmers, factory workers,
17 professional groups, business persons, and young and old; and
 
18     WHEREAS, The Jo Daviess County Republican Party continues
19 to serve the needs of the people today and a majority of county
20 residents identify with the party; therefore, be it
 
21     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
22 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
23 we congratulate the Jo Daviess County Republican Party on the
24 occasion of the 150th anniversary of its first convention; and
25 be it further
 
26     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
27 presented to the Jo Daviess County Republican Party as an
28 expression of our esteem.
