SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
110 ILCS 305/9   from Ch. 144, par. 30

    Amends the University of Illinois Act. Provides that for the benefit of the children of persons who served in the armed forces of the United States during specified periods of hostilities, each county shall be entitled, annually, to a total of five honorary scholarships in the university (instead of one scholarship for each specified period of hostility). Adds any time on or after September 11, 2001 and until Congress or the President orders that persons in service are no longer eligible for the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal to the list of periods of hostilities.

1     AN ACT concerning education.
 
2     Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
 
4     Section 5. The University of Illinois Act is amended by
5 changing Section 9 as follows:
 
6     (110 ILCS 305/9)  (from Ch. 144, par. 30)
7     Sec. 9. Scholarships for children of veterans. For each of
8 the following periods of hostilities, each county shall be
9 entitled, annually, to one honorary scholarship in the
10 University, for the benefit of the children of persons who
11 served in the armed forces of the United States during any of
12 the following periods of hostilities, each county shall be
13 entitled, annually, to a total of five honorary scholarships in
14 the University: the Civil War, World War I, any time between
15 September 16, 1940 and the termination of World War II, any
16 time during the national emergency between June 25, 1950 and
17 January 31, 1955, any time during the Viet Nam conflict between
18 January 1, 1961 and May 7, 1975, and any time on or after
19 August 2, 1990 and until Congress or the President orders that
20 persons in service are no longer eligible for the Southwest
21 Asia Service Medal, and any time on or after September 11, 2001
22 and until Congress or the President orders that persons in
23 service are no longer eligible for the Global War on Terrorism
24 Expeditionary Medal. Preference shall be given to the children
25 of persons who are deceased or disabled. Such scholarships
26 shall be granted to such pupils as shall, upon public
27 examination, conducted as the board of trustees of the
28 University may determine, be decided to have attained the
29 greatest proficiency in the branches of learning usually taught
30 in the secondary schools, and who shall be of good moral
31 character, and not less than 15 years of age. Such pupils, so
32 selected, shall be entitled to receive, without charge for

1 tuition, instruction in any or all departments of the
2 University for a term of at least 4 consecutive years. Such
3 pupils shall conform, in all respects, to the rules and
4 regulations of the University, established for the government
5 of the pupils in attendance.
