SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Duchenne muscular dystrophy affects approximately one out of every 5,000 live male births; and

WHEREAS, Globally, 20,000 children are diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy each year; and

WHEREAS, There are an estimated 15,000 people in the U.S. living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy; and

WHEREAS, With increased funding for research and rapidly improving treatments, people with Duchenne muscular dystrophy have more hope than before; however, there is currently no cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy; and

WHEREAS, Earlier diagnosis of Duchenne muscular dystrophy in children could improve health outcomes for those affected; and

WHEREAS, Symptoms of Duchenne muscular dystrophy include progressive loss of strength and function in the hips, thighs, shoulders, pelvis, arms, lower legs, and trunk; later in life, strength in the muscles of the heart and lungs, heart function, and breathing are also affected; and

WHEREAS, Newborn screening will improve health outcomes for children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare September 7, 2024 as Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Day in the State of Illinois; and be it further

RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be presented to Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD) with our sincere appreciation for their efforts to address Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
