SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to congratulate Robert Smith on the occasion of his retirement after 19 years as head coach of the Simeon Career Academy boys basketball team; and

WHEREAS, Robert Smith's first game as Simeon head coach was Derrick Rose's highly-anticipated debut; his Rose-led teams won back-to-back Class AA state titles in 2006 and 2007, and he guided Simeon to four consecutive Class 4A state championships from 2010 to 2013; and

WHEREAS, Robert Smith recently passed the mark of 500 wins, making him one of the most successful head coaches in Illinois high school basketball history; and

WHEREAS, Robert Smith's final season sees Simeon ranked toward the top once again; he led his team to their eighth city title, and they are contenders for another state championship; and

WHEREAS, Robert Smith's humbleness and openness has kept him relatable to his players over the years; and

WHEREAS, Robert Smith's next move is to focus on fatherhood; both of his children are talented basketball players; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Robert Smith on his retirement after 19 years as head coach of the Simeon Career Academy boys basketball team and wish him the best in all his future endeavors; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Robert Smith as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
