SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of George Peter Yanos of Oak Park, who passed away on May 12, 2023 at the age of 76; and

WHEREAS, George Yanos was born to a nurse and carpenter in Yonkers, New York on November 22, 1946; and

WHEREAS, George Yanos developed an understanding of the importance of family through his grandfather's teachings, which stayed with him for the rest of his life; and

WHEREAS, George Yanos married Jan Hagan on December 27, 1967, and together, they moved to Chicago and then to Oak Park; and

WHEREAS, George Yanos worked at the computer center of the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), while supporting his wife who was studying to become a professor of social work; while there, he was a part of everything, from managing punch cards to installing a supercomputer along with other professional projects; and

WHEREAS, George Yanos briefly worked as a high school mathematics teacher before returning to academia as a researcher and educator at the Urban Transportation Center of UIC, where he relished helping his colleagues and mentoring graduate students; and

WHEREAS, George Yanos remained modest about his role in the invention of the internet; and

WHEREAS, George Yanos dedicated himself to working through problems and always learning by simply being curious; and

WHEREAS, George Yanos loved growing tomatoes and making spaghetti sauce for his family; and

WHEREAS, George Yanos is survived by his daughter and best friend, Nora (Scott); his grandchildren, Belle, Ryan, and Julia; his dogs, Dashi and Kechi; and the families of his brothers John and Paul, his nieces and nephews; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of George Peter Yanos and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of George Yanos as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
