| 1 | | SENATE RESOLUTION | 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | 3 | | to learn of the death of George Peter Yanos of Oak Park, who | 4 | | passed away on May 12, 2023 at the age of 76; and | 5 | | WHEREAS, George Yanos was born to a nurse and carpenter in | 6 | | Yonkers, New York on November 22, 1946; and | 7 | | WHEREAS, George Yanos developed an understanding of the | 8 | | importance of family through his grandfather's teachings, | 9 | | which stayed with him for the rest of his life; and | 10 | | WHEREAS, George Yanos married Jan Hagan on December 27, | 11 | | 1967, and together, they moved to Chicago and then to Oak Park; | 12 | | and | 13 | | WHEREAS, George Yanos worked at the computer center of the | 14 | | University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), while supporting his | 15 | | wife who was studying to become a professor of social work; | 16 | | while there, he was a part of everything, from managing punch | 17 | | cards to installing a supercomputer along with other | 18 | | professional projects; and | 19 | | WHEREAS, George Yanos briefly worked as a high school | 20 | | mathematics teacher before returning to academia as a |

| 1 | | researcher and educator at the Urban Transportation Center of | 2 | | UIC, where he relished helping his colleagues and mentoring | 3 | | graduate students; and | 4 | | WHEREAS, George Yanos remained modest about his role in | 5 | | the invention of the internet; and | 6 | | WHEREAS, George Yanos dedicated himself to working through | 7 | | problems and always learning by simply being curious; and | 8 | | WHEREAS, George Yanos loved growing tomatoes and making | 9 | | spaghetti sauce for his family; and | 10 | | WHEREAS, George Yanos is survived by his daughter and best | 11 | | friend, Nora (Scott); his grandchildren, Belle, Ryan, and | 12 | | Julia; his dogs, Dashi and Kechi; and the families of his | 13 | | brothers John and Paul, his nieces and nephews; therefore, be | 14 | | it | 15 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | 16 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 17 | | George Peter Yanos and extend our sincere condolences to his | 18 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | 19 | | further | 20 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
