SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Marion S. Panepinto of Springfield, who passed away on May 18, 2023; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Panepinto was born in Waco, Texas to Dr. John Joseph and Josephine Cimo Panepinto on May 20, 1938; he graduated cum laude from the University of Notre Dame in 1960; he married Dorothy "Bebe" Driscoll on May 26, 1962; he graduated cum laude from the St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1963, where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society; after completing an internship at St. Louis University Hospitals, he served his country with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War as a battalion surgeon with the First Infantry Division and was awarded the Bronze Star, the Combat Medic Badge, and the Vietnam Service Medal; he received an honorable discharge from the Army and completed his specialty training at the University of Iowa Hospitals in internal medicine and cardiology; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Panepinto joined Springfield Clinic in the early days of development of cardiology and cardiac surgery in Springfield in 1970; he was a co-director of the intensive care unit at Memorial Medical Center; he was a member of the teaching faculty of Southern Illinois University School of Medicine since its inception and retired as a clinical professor of medicine; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Panepinto was past president of the Sangamon County Medical Society and the Sangamon County Heart Association; he served on the boards of Contact Ministries, the YMCA, and the Memorial Medical Center Foundation; he was a member of the Sanibel Current Events Group, the Sanibel Bicycle Club, the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation, and the Porch Think Tank, where he cherished his time spent with friends enjoying coffee and current events; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Panepinto's years of marriage were filled with countless family celebrations, travel, and the building of lifetime memories with the love of his life whom he met in Europe on a college class trip; he reveled in his role as father and grandfather, from fishing, golfing, boating, and biking to partaking in spirited family dinners; he was a voracious reader and had a fondness for history and World War II; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Panepinto was compassionate in all facets of his life; he was a devoted friend and relative to many, especially in their time of need; he always put his patients first, regardless of their status; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Panepinto is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy; his daughters, Celeste (Robert) Marsh III, Dr. Julie Panepinto (Dr. David Brousseau), Michele (Michael) Mannion, and Ellen (Mark) Meyer; his grandchildren, Robert Marsh IV, Ethan Marsh, Peter Marsh, Joseph Brousseau, Andrew Brousseau, Thomas Brousseau, Dr. Matthew Mannion, Ellen Mannion, Colin Mannion, Aileen Mannion, Katherine Meyer, Meredith Meyer, and Luke Meyer; his sister, Mary Celeste Panepinto Greenwell; several nieces and nephews; and his cousin, Dr. Philip (Diane) Cimo; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Dr. Marion S. Panepinto and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Dr. Panepinto as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
