SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Elizabeth N. "Beth" (Newell) Murphy, a
4beloved community leader, who passed away on April 24, 2023;
5and
 
6    WHEREAS, Beth Murphy was raised in the Albany Park
7neighborhood of Chicago; she married James "Jim" Murphy, and
8he preceded her in death in 2003; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Beth and Jim Murphy purchased Ray's Bleachers,
10located across the street from Wrigley Field, in 1980 and
11renamed it Murphy's Bleachers; they added a rooftop to the
12establishment in 1984; and
 
13    WHEREAS, After Jim's passing, Beth Murphy assumed control
14of the business operations; under her ownership, Murphy's
15Bleachers grew into one of America's most iconic sports bars,
16becoming a sanctuary for the neighborhood and Chicago Cubs
17players and a destination for all baseball fans; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Beth Murphy served as the spokesperson for the
19Wrigley rooftop owners, representing the rights of local
20businesses and residents in numerous battles with the Chicago
21Cubs organization; and

1    WHEREAS, Upon her passing, Beth Murphy was fondly
2remembered by friends, staff, and members of the Chicago Cubs
3organization with a variety of stories detailing her impact on
4Cubs players and fans, the neighborhood, and her colleagues,
5for while everyone loved Murphy's Bleachers, they loved her
6more; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Beth Murphy was a Chicago Cubs fan and friend;
8she will be especially remembered as a community leader in the
9Lakeview neighborhood and one of the area's most respected
10business owners; therefore, be it
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
12ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
13Elizabeth N. "Beth" (Newell) Murphy, a beloved community
14leader, and extend our sincere condolences to her family,
15friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further
 
16    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17presented to the family of Beth Murphy as an expression of our
18deepest sympathy.
