SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to
3congratulate Alderman Howard B. Brookins Jr. of the 21st Ward
4on the occasion of his retirement from the Chicago City
5Council; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Alderman Brookins is the son of former Illinois
7Senator Howard B. Brookins Sr.; he graduated from Mendel
8Catholic High School and earned a degree in Mortuary Science
9from Southern Illinois University Carbondale; he earned his
10Juris Doctor from Northern Illinois University College of Law;
11and
 
12    WHEREAS, Prior to serving on the Chicago City Council,
13Alderman Brookins served as an Assistant Public Defender,
14Assistant State's Attorney, and Special Assistant Attorney
15General; he remains a practicing attorney at the Law Office of
16Howard B. Brookins Jr., PC; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Alderman Brookins was first elected to serve the
1821st Ward as an alderman in 2003, representing parts of Auburn
19Gresham and Washington Heights; he is currently completing his
20fifth term as one of the longest sitting members of the Chicago
21City Council, having served for 20 years by the end of this
22term; and

1    WHEREAS, While in office, Alderman Brookins'
2accomplishments include the opening of the 21st Ward's first
3Starbucks, the launch of Chicago's electric scooter program,
4and the establishment of a reparations fund for victims of
5notorious former Chicago Police Commander Jon Burge; he worked
6tirelessly to bring a Walmart Supercenter to West Chatham and
7was instrumental in the development of the Anaerobic Digester,
8which uses food waste to produce renewable energy and nutrient
9rich compost; he also served as chairman of the Committee on
10Economic, Capital and Technology Development, the Committee on
11Education and Child Development, and the Committee on
12Transportation and Public Way; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Alderman Brookins has also shown his dedication
14and commitment to the 21st Ward through hosting many community
15events, including job fairs, internship fairs, high school
16fairs, business advisory council meetings, the Annual Back to
17School Summer Picnic, the Annual 21st Ward Clean & Green, Bike
18the Hood, the Annual Senior Thanksgiving Dinners, the Annual
19Christmas Party, the Summer Music series, the Annual
20Shred-A-Thons, weekly Constituent Nights, and monthly Town
21Hall meetings; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Alderman Brookins has served as a member of
23several organizations, including Prince Hall Mason Eureka

1Lodge #64, the Community Media Workshop Board of Directors,
2the Northern Illinois Alumni Association Board of Directors,
3and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Alderman Brookins has expressed plans to remain
5politically active and to serve as a guide and counsel to young
6people in the 21st Ward Young Democrats organization; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Alderman Brookins is the husband of Ebonie
8Taylor-Brookins and the father of Howard B. Brookins III and
9Harihson B. Brookins; therefore, be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
11ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate
12Alderman Howard B. Brookins Jr. on his retirement from the
13Chicago City Council, thank him for his years of dedicated
14service to the people of the 21st Ward and the City of Chicago,
15and wish him continued success in his future endeavors; and be
16it further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to Alderman Brookins as an expression of our esteem
19and respect.
