SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, It is fitting to honor those who have given their
3lives in service to their community; and
 
4    WHEREAS, From a young age, Officer Brian Pierce Jr. looked
5to serve his community, including with the Raymond/Harvel Fire
6Explorer program, the ISP Junior Police Academy, the Christian
7County Drug and Alcohol Task Force, and the Elkville Fire
8Department; and
 
9    WHEREAS, After graduating from Elkville High School,
10Officer Pierce became the trainer and treasurer of the
11Elkville Fire Department as well as a correctional officer
12with the Menard Correctional Facility; and
 
13    WHEREAS, In 2017, Officer Pierce moved to Makanda, where
14he joined the Makanda Township Fire Department; while there,
15he spent every Monday night training younger firefighters; and
 
16    WHEREAS, In 2019, Officer Pierce assisted the mayor of
17Spillertown in constructing a police department that had not
18existed for ten years, which included assisting in applying
19for funding and grants and helping with day to day operations;
20and

1    WHEREAS, Officer Pierce became a police officer in
2Brooklyn and was killed in the line of duty on August 4, 2021
3while deploying stop sticks to halt a vehicle fleeing police;
4and
 
5    WHEREAS, At the time of his death, Officer Pierce was
6survived by his parents, a sister, and a niece and nephew;
7therefore, be it
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
9ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF
10REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the
11section of Illinois Route 37 from Longstreet Road to
12Prosperity Road as it passes Spillertown as the "Officer Brian
13Pierce Jr. Memorial Highway"; and be it further
 
14    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
15is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
16State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
17giving notice of the name "Officer Brian Pierce Jr. Memorial
18Highway"; and be it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20presented to the family of Officer Pierce and the Secretary of
21Transportation.
