HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to congratulate the Christian County Agricultural Fair on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and

WHEREAS, On April 29, 1924, the Christian County Agricultural Fair was founded by Phil S. Haner, Robert Carlin, Louis Tolliver, and Edward Alton, who rented and held the fair on 40 acres of land located at the west edge of Taylorville from 1924 through 1935; and

WHEREAS, After watching the Christian County Agricultural Fair grow in popularity over its first decade, the four business partners purchased the fairgrounds for $5,000 in 1935; and

WHEREAS, In its early days, the Christian Country Agricultural Fair was home to the most outstanding society horse shows in the Midwest and was the largest society horse show for county fairs in the State of Illinois; and

WHEREAS, The Christian County Agricultural Fair also sponsored harness and running races, as the track was considered one of the best in the United States and was a member of the "Top Line" race circuit; and

WHEREAS, The Christian County Agricultural Fair held many other events during this time, including the Western Horse Show and beef cattle, dairy cattle, hog, and sheep shows; in its early years, it also hosted draft and mule shows and horse pulling contests prior to the advent of tractor pulling contests seen today; and

WHEREAS, Over the past 100 years, the Christian County Agricultural Fair has been made possible thanks to hundreds of Christian County residents giving thousands of hours of their time, making the fair one of the finest in Illinois; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the Christian County Agricultural Fair on its centennial anniversary, and we wish the fair continued success in the future; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Christian County Agricultural Fair as an expression of our esteem and respect.
