HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of
4Alexandria Lynn Scott Pearson of Peoria, who passed away on
5March 17, 2024; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Lynn Scott Pearson was born to Allen and Gabrella
7(McClelland) Scott in Bloomington on December 6, 1941; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Lynn Scott Pearson worked as a materials handler
9at Caterpillar, Inc., retiring after 30 years of service in
101998; while at Caterpillar, she was very active with UAW Local
11974, the CAP Committee, the Women Committee, and the Fair
12Practice Committee, and she presided as co-chair of Unit 4;
13and
 
14    WHEREAS, Lynn Scott Pearson was elected to the Peoria
15County Board in 1984, where she served for 32 years before
16retiring in 2016; she served as vice-chair from 1992 to 1994
17and 1996 to 1998; she became the first African American to be
18appointed chairperson, serving in that position from 1998 to
192000; during her tenure, she was a member of numerous
20committees and a trailblazer, championing many incentives that
21still benefit the region today; and

1    WHEREAS, Lynn Scott Pearson passionately fought on behalf
2of others throughout her life, joining the NAACP at a young age
3to bring change to the hiring practices at Sears & Roebucks and
4Cilco Electric Co. in Peoria; she was a lifelong member of the
5Peoria NAACP, serving on numerous committees and boards over
6the years; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Lynn Scott Pearson represented her community
8through many other organizations, including serving as the
9chairperson of the Tri-County Regional Planning Commission and
10the Peoria County Democratic Women Committee, a delegate for
11the 1980 Democratic Convention, the co-chair of Peoria
12Community Against Violence, the board president of the
13Friendship House, a board member of the United Way, a charter
14member of the Peoria Red Hat Club and the A. Phillip Randolph
15Foundation, and a member of the Peoria African American Hall
16of Fame and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program; she became a
17member of the Police and Fire Commission on June 28, 2005,
18serving as chairperson from 2008 and 2022 and vice-chair until
19December 2023; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Lynn Scott Pearson was a lifelong member of Ward
21Chapel AME Church, where she was one of only two women to serve
22as trustee; she was also chair of the Social Action
23Commission, where she organized the candidate forum,
24registered voters, and kept the congregation informed on

1issues affecting their community; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Lynn Scott Pearson was the recipient of many
3accolades, including the Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative
4Service Leadership Award in 2017; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Lynn Scott Pearson enjoyed traveling, reading,
6caring for her family, listening to music, attending social
7gatherings, eagle watching, and pairing good food with good
8conversation; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Lynn Scott Pearson was a true caregiver, serving
10her family, friends, church, and community, and served as a
11mentor to many women; she will be remembered as a champion for
12female empowerment in politics and civic affairs; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Lynn Scott Pearson was preceded in death by her
14parents; her son, Scott Darell Pearson; and her sisters, Karen
15Scott and Betty Welch; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Lynn Scott Pearson is survived by her sons, Allen
17Pearson Sr. and Jay (Ja'nice) Pearson; her grandchildren,
18Ciera (Kevin Syrovy) Wallace, Nevaeh (DeMarcus Stephenson)
19Pearson, Allen Pearson Jr., Brianne Pearson, Nikia Pearson,
20Jamara (Christian) Pearson-Lloyd, Caleb (Hallaha Powers)
21Pearson, Christiaan Pearson, and Deven Pearson; her seven

1great-grandchildren, Kieran, Celisa, Jamaria, Jay, Amiya,
2Alaysia, and Alexander; her nieces, Kendra Nunn and Ebonie
3Scott; her nephews, Corey Scott and Glen Scott; her special
4friends, Barbra Jamison and Edie Grady; and a host of
5relatives and friends; therefore, be it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
7HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
8we mourn the passing of Alexandria Lynn Scott Pearson and
9extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all
10who knew and loved her; and be it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12presented to the family of Lynn Scott Pearson as an expression
13of our deepest sympathy.
