HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Across the United States, National Crochet Month is celebrated every year; and

WHEREAS, It is unclear how crocheting traveled to the Americas, but the first documented instances of such knitting come from the Guiana Indians tribe and settlements; and

WHEREAS, As far as appreciation of crochet is concerned, the Crochet Guild of America (C.G.O.A.) was formed in the United States in 1995, and March has been recognized as National Crochet Month since 2005; and

WHEREAS, Some people crochet just for fun, and some make it their source of income; crocheting is a healthy activity that relieves stress and anxiety; and

WHEREAS, Although many people believe crocheting is a women's hobby, a number of men crochet, including Snoop Dogg, Ryan Reynolds, Rosey Grier, Christopher Walken, Donald Glover, and Gold Medalist Tom Daley; and

WHEREAS, Representative Diane Blair-Sherlock's district office has established a co-ed knitting and crochet group called Unraveled that meets three times a month to crochet scarves, hats, and mittens for those in need; together, the group has donated over 600 handmade items to Dupage Pads, the Outreach House, the Illinois Community for Displaced Immigrants, the Islamic Circle of North America, and the Dupage Health Coalition; the evening Unraveled event became so popular that a daytime Unraveled group was added for those who preferred to come during the daylight hours; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare March of 2024 as Crochet Month in the State of Illinois; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we recognize the Unraveled crochet group for their contributions to their community.
