HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Osteosarcoma, which is also called osteogenic
3sarcoma, is the most common type of cancer that starts in the
4bones; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The cancer cells in these tumors look like early
6forms of bone cells that normally help make new bone tissue,
7but the bone tissue in an osteosarcoma is not as strong as that
8in normal bones; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Most osteosarcomas occur in children, teens, and
10young adults; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Although teens are the most commonly affected age
12group, osteosarcoma can develop at any age; and
 
13    WHEREAS, In children, teens, and young adults,
14osteosarcoma usually starts in areas where the bone is growing
15quickly, such as near the ends of the leg or arm bones; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Many symptoms of osteosarcoma can be easily
17ignored as normal growing pains in children, which makes
18regular check-ups and referrals to specialists extremely
19important; and

1    WHEREAS, Prompt diagnosis and identification of cancer is
2crucial to successful treatment; therefore, be it
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
4HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
5we declare September 15, 2023 as "Osteosarcoma Awareness Day"
6in the State of Illinois; and be it further
 
7    RESOLVED, That we urge the federal government to allocate
8more funding toward finding a cure for osteosarcoma; and be it
9further
 
10    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
11delivered to the President of the United States, the U.S.
12Senate Majority Leader, the U.S. Senate Minority Leader, the
13U.S. Speaker of the House, the U.S. House of Representatives
14Minority Leader, and all members of the Illinois Congressional
15Delegation.
