HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Brother Konrad Diebold, FSC, was born in Minneapolis to Laura and Joseph Diebold on June 22, 1937; and

WHEREAS, Brother Konrad joined the Brothers of the Christian Schools in 1957 at the age of 20; and

WHEREAS, Brother Konrad received his Bachelor of Arts in 1961 and his master's degree in Education in 1966 from St. Mary's University of Minnesota; and

WHEREAS, Brother Konrad also took graduate courses at Loyola University, DePaul University, and Northwestern University in addition to studying at the Université de Montréal, L'Alliance Française in Paris and the Lasallian Institute Center in Rome; and

WHEREAS, Brother Konrad began teaching at St. Patrick High School on Chicago's northwest side in 1961 and transferred to St. Paul High School on the south side in 1966, where he taught and was principal through 1974; and

WHEREAS, Following his time at St. Paul's, Brother Konrad was the high school Curriculum Consultant with the Archdiocesan Office of Catholic Education and was then called to province leadership for the Christian Brothers as Auxiliary Provincial from 1975 through 1982, where he worked as the Director of Finance and Director of Education for all Province entities; and

WHEREAS, Brother Konrad returned to St. Patrick High School after a year of sabbatical and study in Europe, primarily in Paris and Rome; and

WHEREAS, Brother Konrad began serving as principal of St. Patrick High School in 1983 and was named the first president of St. Patrick in 1987; and

WHEREAS, Brother Konrad also served on many boards, councils, and associations with almost all being related to education and being mission-driven; and

WHEREAS, In his 50th year as a Brother of the Christian Schools and in acknowledgment of his educational and administrative leadership, Lewis University conferred on Brother Konrad a doctoral degree in Humanities, Honoris Causa, in December 2007; and

WHEREAS, Six years later in 2013, Brother Konrad retired but returned as a substitute English teacher in October of 2022; and

WHEREAS, Brother Konrad passed away on October 10th, 2022 after decades of devoted service and commitment to his communities and schools; and

WHEREAS, In a demonstration of how beloved Brother Konrad was at St. Patrick's High School, the day after Brother Konrad died, all of the students attended school in a shirt and tie to honor him; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we recognize and honor the life of Brother Konrad Diebold, FSC, his contributions to education, and the institutions where he served in his esteemed career, answering the call to service one last time in the final days of his life; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to President Dan Santucci of St. Patrick's High School as an expression of our grief and to uphold the legacy of Brother Konrad Diebold.
