HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Many people enjoy learning about history, and the
3recognition, or study, of the past allows students of all
4ages, young and old, the opportunity to learn and grow; and
 
5    WHEREAS, History offers many important insights into the
6present and the possible future; by learning and understanding
7the successes and failures of the past, the groundwork for a
8brighter future ahead is laid; it is important to encourage
9history education due to its instillment of civic duties and
10qualities that good citizenship requires; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Connections to the past help build empathic
12connections to the present and the future, aid in the
13acquisition of research, writing, and analytical skills that
14are beneficial in any career field, and offer greater insight
15into local, state, national, and global affairs; and
 
16    WHEREAS, History comes in many forms, including diaries
17and journals, audio and visual recordings, and pop culture,
18which assist in ensuring the current generation's legacy is
19passed down to future generations; it is important to honor
20the legacies our ancestors left for us, for better or worse, as
21we hope that our descendants will honor us; and

1    WHEREAS, National History Day is a nonprofit education
2organization improving the teaching and learning of history;
3and
 
4    WHEREAS, National History Day reaches more than half a
5million students and tens of thousands of teachers each year
6through its international student history contest and its wide
7range of professional development programs for teachers,
8curriculum tools, and other educational activities; and
 
9    WHEREAS, National History Day's core program is its
10competition in which students in grades 6 through 12 choose a
11historical topic that they then explore deeply by conducting
12extensive research in libraries, archives, and museums before
13presenting their conclusions and evidence through papers,
14exhibits, performances, documentaries, or websites, moving
15through a series of contest levels where they are evaluated by
16professional historians and educators; and
 
17    WHEREAS, The knowledge of history is the birthright of all
18individuals from every walk of life, and the study of history
19allows us to learn and grow from the past in order to advance
20towards a brighter, happier, and more peaceful future where we
21can live life to the fullest; therefore, be it
 
22    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE

1HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
2SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we declare June 15, 2024 as
3History Day in the State of Illinois; and be it further
 
4    RESOLVED, That we recognize all those who volunteer at
5historical societies in Illinois for all they do to preserve
6and spread our history; and be it further
 
7    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
8presented to the National History Day organization as a symbol
9of our respect and esteem.
