SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was
3founded by 22 illustrious college-educated young women on the
4campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. in January
51913; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Shortly after the founding of Delta Sigma Theta
7Sorority, Inc., the 22 young women participated in the Women's
8Suffrage March and demanded rights for women, including the
9right to vote, which transformed the role of women in the
10democratic process; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is an
12organization of college-educated women committed to the
13constructive development of its members through public service
14with a primary focus on the Black community; and
 
15    WHEREAS, The programs of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
16are implemented through its Five Point Programmatic Thrust,
17which includes Economic Development, Educational Development,
18Physical and Mental Health, Political Awareness and
19Involvement, and International Awareness and Involvement; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. are
21accomplished corporate, civic, and public officials and

1acclaimed scholars; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has a membership
3of more than 350,000 college-educated women in more than 1,020
4chapters worldwide, of which 25 chapters are located in the
5State of Illinois; and
 
6    WHEREAS, In 1989, the National Social Action Commission
7instituted Delta Days in the Nation's Capital as a biennial
8legislative conference to increase member involvement in the
9public policy-making process; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Delta Days at the Illinois State Capitol has
11occurred on a regular basis with members from across the State
12in attendance; therefore, be it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
14ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare May 3, 2023
15as Delta Day 2023 at the State Capitol in recognition of Delta
16Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated and the 2023 theme of
17"Effectuating Change: Impact through Accountability,
18Empowerment and Action"; and be it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20presented to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. as a symbol of
21our respect and esteem.
