HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate the Christian County
4Agricultural Fair on the occasion of its 100th anniversary;
5and
 
6    WHEREAS, On April 29, 1924, the Christian County
7Agricultural Fair was founded by Phil S. Haner, Robert Carlin,
8Louis Tolliver, and Edward Alton, who rented and held the fair
9on 40 acres of land located at the west edge of Taylorville
10from 1924 through 1935; and
 
11    WHEREAS, After watching the Christian County Agricultural
12Fair grow in popularity over its first decade, the four
13business partners purchased the fairgrounds for $5,000 in
141935; and
 
15    WHEREAS, In its early days, the Christian Country
16Agricultural Fair was home to the most outstanding society
17horse shows in the Midwest and was the largest society horse
18show for county fairs in the State of Illinois; and
 
19    WHEREAS, The Christian County Agricultural Fair also
20sponsored harness and running races, as the track was
21considered one of the best in the United States and was a

1member of the "Top Line" race circuit; and
 
2    WHEREAS, The Christian County Agricultural Fair held many
3other events during this time, including the Western Horse
4Show and beef cattle, dairy cattle, hog, and sheep shows; in
5its early years, it also hosted draft and mule shows and horse
6pulling contests prior to the advent of tractor pulling
7contests seen today; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Over the past 100 years, the Christian County
9Agricultural Fair has been made possible thanks to hundreds of
10Christian County residents giving thousands of hours of their
11time, making the fair one of the finest in Illinois;
12therefore, be it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
14HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
15we congratulate the Christian County Agricultural Fair on its
16centennial anniversary, and we wish the fair continued success
17in the future; and be it further
 
18    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19presented to the Christian County Agricultural Fair as an
20expression of our esteem and respect.
