HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to congratulate the Village of Strasburg on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of its founding; and

WHEREAS, The Village of Strasburg is located on the Grand Prairie Trail in the southeastern part of Shelby County, and the land was originally visited by many covered wagons on their way east of the Sangamon country by individuals who watered their horses, oxen, and cows in the tributary to Richland Creek, a tributary that runs through nearly the center of the village; and

WHEREAS, The territory within and around where the Village of Strasburg was established possesses rich soil, and the first effort to actually farm the land was made in approximately 1840; and

WHEREAS, Some of the first settlers to the Village of Strasburg arrived in the 1850s, originally hailing from southern Germany and known as "Low Germans" to distinguish them from the "High Germans" of northern Germany who spoke an altogether different dialect; the village gained a number of High German settlers in the 1860s and 1870s and a considerable number of Pennsylvania Dutch in the 1880s; and

WHEREAS, The early settlers of the Village of Strasburg were a religious people and soon founded St. Paul's congregation, holding the first service in 1866 and building the church in 1875; and

WHEREAS, Over the years, the Village of Strasburg has been home to hundreds of men and women who have loyally served their country as members of the U.S. Armed Forces in a number of conflicts, including the Civil War, the Vietnam War, and Operation Enduring Freedom, and the village continues to be home to a number of members of the military and veterans today; and

WHEREAS, The Village of Strasburg's service organizations have donated considerable time and effort to generously raise and provide funds for a myriad of worthy causes in the community, the area, and beyond, and these organizations include American Legion Post #289, American Legion Auxiliary Unit #289, the Strasburg Lions Club, and the Strasburg Community Action Network (SCAN); and

WHEREAS, Today, the Village of Strasburg stands as a shining example of the results of hard work, self-discipline, and genuine care and concern for one's family and neighbors; its citizens live with respect for the past and a vision for the future; and

WHEREAS, The Village of Strasburg will be celebrating its 150th anniversary from June 14 to June 16, 2024; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the Village of Strasburg on the 150th anniversary of its founding, and we wish its citizens continued success in the future; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Village of Strasburg as an expression of our esteem and respect.
