SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Harvey "Junior" Michael Smith Jr. of Chicago, who passed away on February 1, 2021; and

WHEREAS, Harvey Smith was born to Harvey and Mary Smith in Chicago on March 1, 1960; as a child, he attended St. Mel Catholic Church, where he committed to his faith; as a teenager, he joined Young Life Ministry and traveled to various states for outreach activities; as a young adult, he attended Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church; later in life, he recommitted to his faith; he attended Delano Elementary School and Lawrence Upper Grade Center and graduated from Orr Academy High School; and

WHEREAS, Harvey Smith had many gifts and talents; he was known as the walking calculator because he could do mathematical computations quickly in his head; he enjoyed food, music, dancing, watching Jeopardy, watching basketball and football, and playing cards; he had a beautiful smile and a compliment for every woman he met; he loved spending time with his family and his second family, the Roseberry; and

WHEREAS, Harvey Smith was preceded in death by his father, Harvey G. Smith; his stepfather, Hearest Cathey; his paternal grandparents, Leroy and Irene Smith; his maternal grandparents, John and Rita McCormick; his step-grandparents, Lesile and Beulah Cathy; his aunts, Kay, Joan, Rose, Bernice, Vermaline, Patsy, and Magdalene; his uncles, Jack, Tommie, and LeRoy; and his cousin, Leslie; and

WHEREAS, Harvey Smith is survived by his mother, Mary Smith; his three sisters, Rosemarie Smith-Burch, Rita Sutton, and Denise (Reginald Akeem) Berry; his brother, Leo (Estella) Smith; his nieces and nephews; and the rest of his family and friends; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Harvey "Junior" Michael Smith Jr. and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Harvey Smith as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
