SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Harvey "Junior" Michael Smith Jr. of
4Chicago, who passed away on February 1, 2021; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Harvey Smith was born to Harvey and Mary Smith in
6Chicago on March 1, 1960; as a child, he attended St. Mel
7Catholic Church, where he committed to his faith; as a
8teenager, he joined Young Life Ministry and traveled to
9various states for outreach activities; as a young adult, he
10attended Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church; later in life, he
11recommitted to his faith; he attended Delano Elementary School
12and Lawrence Upper Grade Center and graduated from Orr Academy
13High School; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Harvey Smith had many gifts and talents; he was
15known as the walking calculator because he could do
16mathematical computations quickly in his head; he enjoyed
17food, music, dancing, watching Jeopardy, watching basketball
18and football, and playing cards; he had a beautiful smile and a
19compliment for every woman he met; he loved spending time with
20his family and his second family, the Roseberry; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Harvey Smith was preceded in death by his father,
22Harvey G. Smith; his stepfather, Hearest Cathey; his paternal

1grandparents, Leroy and Irene Smith; his maternal
2grandparents, John and Rita McCormick; his step-grandparents,
3Lesile and Beulah Cathy; his aunts, Kay, Joan, Rose, Bernice,
4Vermaline, Patsy, and Magdalene; his uncles, Jack, Tommie, and
5LeRoy; and his cousin, Leslie; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Harvey Smith is survived by his mother, Mary
7Smith; his three sisters, Rosemarie Smith-Burch, Rita Sutton,
8and Denise (Reginald Akeem) Berry; his brother, Leo (Estella)
9Smith; his nieces and nephews; and the rest of his family and
10friends; therefore, be it
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
12ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
13Harvey "Junior" Michael Smith Jr. and extend our sincere
14condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
15him; and be it further
 
16    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17presented to the family of Harvey Smith as an expression of our
18deepest sympathy.
