SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Lieutenant Colonel Bernard "Bernie" Goulet Sr. (Ret.) of Springfield, who passed away on November 16, 2021; and

WHEREAS, Bernie Goulet was born to Joseph and Clara (Neef) Goulet in Springfield on April 22, 1931; he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, where he survived the Chosin Reservoir and earned a Bronze Star for Heroism in Ground Combat, the Purple Heart, the Legion of Merit, the Combat Infantry Badge, and the U.N. Korean Service Medal; he married Barbara Geary in 1956, and they celebrated 53 years of marriage before she preceded him in death in 2010; he earned his master's degree in Business from Sangamon State University, which is now the University of Illinois Springfield; he graduated from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; and

WHEREAS, Bernie Goulet worked at the U.S. Post Office and the Springfield Army Reserve, where he retired as a lieutenant colonel; and

WHEREAS, Bernie Goulet was a member of the Christ the King Parish, American Legion Post 32, Disabled American Veterans (D.A.V.), and the Retired Officers Association; he enjoyed music thoroughly, singing in the church choir, the Muni, Mob on the Road, and Mature Mob until his late 80s; he was an avid gardener and a voracious reader; and

WHEREAS, Bernie Goulet was a wise, loving, and honorable man; he was a true patriarch to his family; he will be missed; and

WHEREAS, Bernie Goulet was preceded in death by his first wife, two brothers, and four sisters; and

WHEREAS, Bernie Goulet is survived by his wife, Velma Neal Goulet; his sons, Bernie (Karen) Goulet Jr. and Matt (Tamara) Goulet; his daughters, Ellen (Steve) Siadek and Diane (Wes) Fisher; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Lieutenant Colonel Bernard "Bernie" Goulet Sr. and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Bernie Goulet as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
