SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Nancy Mackiewicz of Springfield, who passed away on September 18, 2021; and

WHEREAS, Nancy Mackiewicz was born to Chester Mackiewicz and Joyce Brundle Mackiewicz in Detroit, Michigan on October 19, 1958; she graduated from Ferndale High School in 1976; she earned her Bachelor of Science from Grand Valley State College in Grand Rapids; she eventually received her master's degree in Geology from Northern Illinois University; she married Roger Kennedy in Springfield on July 25, 1992; and

WHEREAS, Nancy Mackiewicz entered civil service with the Illinois Office of the Attorney General to assist the regulations and controls put into place to protect the environment; she later joined Goodwin & Broms as an environmental geologist; after G & B was sold, she was hired as a branch manager by Superior Environmental in 2003, where she tackled the day-to-day front-line work until her retirement in October 2019; she lived a life of public service and successfully managed a few thousand site actions throughout her career; and

WHEREAS, Nancy Mackiewicz co-authored a journal article that coined the term "Cyclopel", which was a new phrase in the lexicon of geology that describes the cyclic deposition of sediments from the face of glaciers and is still in common usage today; and

WHEREAS, Nancy Mackiewicz was a member of the Springfield Art Association; she was an accomplished jeweler and ceramicist; and

WHEREAS, Nancy Mackiewicz acquired a love of nature from summers camping with her family throughout Michigan and Canada, and her favorite spot was her grandfather's home on the shores of Lake Ontario; she traveled to Europe as part of her studies and loved to explore hidden gems in Illinois, Wisconsin, and the rest of the U.S. with her husband; she loved her cats, Buster and Hemingway, pottery, her friends and family, and traveling and exploring the back roads with her husband; and

WHEREAS, Nancy Mackiewicz was preceded in death by her parents; and

WHEREAS, Nancy Mackiewicz is survived by her husband of 29 years, Roger Kennedy; her sisters, Stefanie (Dennis III) Wagner, Susan (George Jr.) Ambrozy, and Jennifer (Stephen Blamires) Mackiewicz; her beloved niece, Lee Ambrozy; her nephews, George Ambrozy III, Dennis Wagner IV, Jeffrey Wagner, and David Wagner; her grandnephew, Heron Ambrozy Fu; and her stepmother, Amelia Mackiewicz; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Nancy Mackiewicz and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Nancy Mackiewicz as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
