SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Amy Szczepaniak, who passed away on
4July 2, 2021 at the age of 53; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Amy Szczepaniak was born to Susan and Kazimierz
6Szczepaniak in Cleveland, Ohio on May 26, 1968; she then moved
7to Joliet, where she was raised along with her sister, Anna,
8and brothers, Michael and Philip; she attended St. Paul the
9Apostle Grade School and the St. Francis Academy; she
10graduated from Northern Illinois University; she later earned
11a law degree from DePaul University; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Amy Szczepaniak's intelligence and empathy
13compelled her towards a career representing those who could
14not represent themselves, defending the legal rights of the
15mentally ill as a staff attorney for the Illinois Guardianship
16and Advocacy Commission and navigating the volatile world
17between disability and the law with respect and dignity; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Amy Szczepaniak possessed an uncanny ability to
19understand and communicate with animals, from riding horseback
20in the mountains of New Mexico to sharing her home with many
21pet companions over many years, providing excellent care
22through sickness and old age and always ensuring them an

1optimal and thriving life; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Amy Szczepaniak was a devoted life partner to
3Anne Horrigan, and they dedicated their lives to each other
4and shared their love and admiration for 22 years; their
5relationship was a common source of inspiration and happiness
6to those around them; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Amy Szczepaniak was preceded in death by her
8father; and
 
9    WHEREAS, At the time of her death, Amy Szczepaniak was
10survived by her mother; her life partner, Anne Horrigan; her
11sister, Anna (Peter) Harlan; her brothers, Michael (Renae)
12Szczepaniak and Philip Szczepaniak; her step-mother, Doris
13Szczepaniak; her former sister-in-law, Mariclaire O'Connor;
14her niece and nephew, Erin and Sam Szczepaniak; and her
15nephews, Jonah, Quentin, and Theo Harlan; therefore, be it
 
16    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
17ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
18Amy Szczepaniak and extend our sincere condolences to her
19family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
20further
 
21    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
