SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Dale Michael Geiss, MD, who passed
4away on June 11, 2021; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Dr. Geiss was born in Mandan, North Dakota to
6Lawrence and Clara Geiss on April 6, 1944; he was an excellent
7student and was chosen to enter the Catholic seminary at the
8age of 14; he finished high school and two years of college at
9St. John's Seminary; he earned a degree from North Dakota
10State University and did his graduate work in neuropsychology;
11he received his medical degree from Baylor University in
12Texas; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Dr. Geiss completed surgical residencies in
14California, Wisconsin, and Toronto; he became proficient in
15both adult and pediatric cardiac surgery; he settled in Peoria
16and established a reputation for superior skills and immense
17compassion; he founded the Children's Heart Institute in l980
18and accomplished many "firsts", such as pediatric mitral valve
19repair and the Norwood procedure; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Dr. Geiss spent most of his surgical career at
21OSF St. Francis in Peoria; later, he helped revive struggling
22programs in the Quad Cities and Champaign-Urbana; he completed

112,000 surgeries over his lifetime; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Dr. Geiss could make it fun to be in the operating
3room; he enjoyed flying his twin engine Aerostar; he loved
4watching sports, especially football, and caring for stray
5cats; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Dr. Geiss's family includes Pam, Kristin, and
7Pam's daughter, Amy; Kristin is married to Michael Curran and
8has four grown children and three grandkids; Amy and her
9husband, Bill, have twin teenage boys; therefore, be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
11ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
12Dale Michael Geiss, MD and extend our sincere condolences to
13his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
14further
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to the family of Dr. Geiss as an expression of our
17deepest sympathy.
