SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Ronald Elmer "Ron" Schumacher, Elgin
4resident and a Dundee-area mainstay, who passed away on
5November 9, 2019; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Ron Schumacher was born in Elgin to Elmer Emil
7Schumacher and Clarice Mueller Schumacher on May 7, 1923; he
8grew up in a historic home on Second Street in West Dundee; he
9attended Immanuel Lutheran Church and School as a child;
10alongside his brother Bob, he was an accomplished marimba
11player; he graduated as salutatorian from Dundee Community
12High School in 1941, where he excelled in academics and
13baseball, and he played center in basketball under Coach
14Eugene deLacy, who led Dundee High School to its only Illinois
15State Basketball Championship in 1938; he served as a
16minesweeper and a chaplain in the U.S. Navy during World War II
17and was stationed in the Pacific theater; after the war ended
18in 1945, he returned to and graduated from Northwestern
19University in Evanston, where he again excelled in academics
20and basketball and was the starting pitcher on the Wildcats
21baseball team; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Ron Schumacher first worked as a traveling
23salesman selling kitchen cabinets for the Howell Company;

1dissatisfied with the constant traveling, he soon started a
2career in the insurance business with a position at Bankers
3Life; he quickly moved to Northwestern Mutual Life (NML),
4where he enjoyed a successful and lucrative 50-year career;
5during his time at NML, he was a member of the company's
6million-dollar club for an incredible 34 years in a row; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Ron Schumacher was deeply committed to his faith
8and was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in East Dundee
9for his entire life; he was a member of the Republican Party;
10he was always was deeply involved in the community, first in
11the Dundee-area while his children were growing up and then
12later in Elgin; he was a board member of several
13organizations, including the Elgin Chamber of Commerce, the
14Elgin Rotary Club, the Elgin Kiwanis Club, and the Elgin YMCA;
15he often volunteered to be a basketball coach and referee
16during the winter basketball season; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Ron Schumacher remained active during his entire
18adult life; he vacationed with his family in Minnesota and
19Wisconsin during the summers of the 1960s, and his family's
20favorite spot was the Shingwauk resort located near Little
21Pine Lake in Aitkin, Minnesota; he acquired property near
22Green Lake in the 1970s; he enjoyed playing tennis at the Elgin
23Country Club, and he played tennis until his mid-eighties when
24his doctor forced him to stop; and

1    WHEREAS, Ron Schumacher was known by many names to his
2grandchildren, including Grandpa, Grandpa Duck, Grandpa Ron,
3and Bompa; he will be remembered for his incredibly sharp
4mind, his dedication to giving his best, his competitive
5nature, and his quiet, dignified manner; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Ron Schumacher was preceded in death by his first
7wife, Ruth Glaser Schumacher; his second wife, Elizabeth
8"Betty" Bower Schumacher; his son, James Schumacher; his
9daughter, Jane Schumacher Hawkins; and his great-grandson,
10Luke Schumacher; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Ron Schumacher is survived by his brother, Robert
12Schumacher; his children, Susan Schumacher (formerly Koppen),
13Robert Schumacher (Jane), and William Schumacher (Karen); his
14grandchildren, Leslie Schumacher, Brett Koppen, Brian Koppen,
15Branden Koppen, Matthew Schumacher, Mark Schumacher, Jeremy
16Hawkins, Jennifer Hawkins, and Jaclyn (Hawkins) Slager; and
17his great-grandchildren, Blake Koppen, Jackson Schumacher,
18Audrey Schumacher, Robert Crum, J.J. Crum, and Keoni Hawkins;
19therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
21ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
22Ronald Elmer "Ron" Schumacher and extend our sincere

1condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
2him; and be it further
 
3    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4presented to the family of Ron Schumacher as an expression of
5our deepest sympathy.
