SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Lt. Gov. Corinne Wood served as the first female
3Lt. Governor of Illinois from 1999 to 2003; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Lt. Gov. Wood was known as a staunch advocate for
5women and children; her experience also included service as a
6state representative, attorney, and community activist, as
7well as wife and mother; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Lt. Gov. Wood served as a member of the Illinois
9House of Representatives from 1997 to 1999, and during her
10first year as a member of the Illinois Legislature, she passed
11more bills that were signed into law than any other freshman
12state representative; and
 
13    WHEREAS, During her bid for Lt. Governor, Lt. Gov. Wood
14made campaign visits to all 102 counties in Illinois,
15discussing the ambitious agenda of the Ryan/Wood team, and on
16November 3rd, 1998, she was elected Lieutenant Governor of
17Illinois; and
 
18    WHEREAS, During her time as Lt. Governor, Lt. Gov. Wood
19championed women's health and was dedicated to improving
20health care for women; and

1    WHEREAS, Lt. Gov. Wood launched the highly regarded Check
2for a Cure campaign to increase contributions to the State's
3breast cancer research fund; her initiative was extremely
4effective and, in the first year, doubled the revenue donated
5to this fund; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Lt. Gov. Wood served as the Chair of Women's
7Health Illinois, an inter-agency program that focuses on
8enhancing women's health education and services; she also
9served as Honorary Chair of the Governor's Commission on the
10Status of Women; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Lt. Gov. Wood worked to triple funding for the
12State's Office of Women's Health, expanding health education
13and outreach efforts and making a program for low-cost breast
14and cervical exams available to more women throughout
15Illinois; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Lt. Gov. Wood created and hosted a Midwest
17Emmy-nominated cable television show, Today's Healthy Woman,
18to provide important health information to Illinois women and
19their families; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Lt. Gov. Wood served as the Chair of the
21Governor's Rural Affairs Council and the Illinois Rural Bond
22Bank, as well as the Chair of the Illinois Main Street Council;

2    WHEREAS, Lt. Gov. Wood courageously battled with breast
3cancer throughout her life, including during her time as Lt.
4Governor; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Lt. Gov. Wood's dedication to public service,
6despite battling breast cancer, showed how strong she was and
7how dedicated she was to improving Illinois; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Above all, Lt. Gov. Wood was a wife to Paul and a
9mother to three children, Ashley, Brandon, and Courtney; she
10will be missed by her family, friends, and colleagues;
11therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
13ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare May 28, 2021
14as "Lt. Governor Corinne Wood Day" in the State of Illinois to
15commemorate her years of public service and to celebrate the
16life that she led; and be it further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be presented to
18Lt. Gov. Wood's family as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
