SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Thomas Russell "Tom" Slater of Moline, who passed away on October 29, 2022; and

WHEREAS, Tom Slater was born to Everett James and Dorothy Armina (Wells) Slater in Rock Island on April 8, 1929; he graduated from Rock Island High School in 1948, where he excelled in football, basketball, and track; he served in the U.S. Army at Camp Irwin in California for two years during the Korean War, helping train soldiers in tank operations in the Mojave Desert; he married Vera Jean Morley in 1953, and they made their home in Moline; and

WHEREAS, Tom Slater worked for John Deere Planter for 42 years before retiring in 1987; he also worked as a golf course marshal for several years; and

WHEREAS, Tom Slater served on church committees at First United Methodist Church, now Riverside UMC, in Moline; he also helped his sons in their Boy Scout activities; and

WHEREAS, Tom Slater enjoyed golfing with friends and family; he loved feeding wildlife, except squirrels, in his backyard; and

WHEREAS, Tom Slater was preceded in death by his brother, Lawrence Slater; his sister, Barbara Moad; his sister-in-law, Marjorie Slater; and his nephew, Craig Slater; and

WHEREAS, Tom Slater is survived by his wife; his sons, Mark (Cindy) Slater, Chris (Connie) Slater, and Todd (Lisa) Slater; his grandchildren, Melissa (Nick) Anderson, Lauren (Matt) Dufrene, Austin Slater, Grant Slater, and Mason Slater; his great-grandchildren, Dexter Anderson, Max Anderson, and Rosemary Dufrene; his brother, Philip Beardsley; his niece, Laurie (Craig) Kramer; and his nephews, Justin Slater and Brian Moad; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Thomas Russell "Tom" Slater and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Tom Slater as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
