SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Louis "Louie" Joseph Smarjesse, who
4passed away on February 12, 2021; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Louie Smarjesse was born to Rose and John
6Smarjesse on October 3, 1932; he attended St. Peter and Paul
7School; he left Cathedral High School early to join the U.S.
8Army, where he finished his schooling and served on Okinawa
9during the Korean War; he scored so well on Army tests that he
10was placed in Intelligence and Reconnaissance; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Louie Smarjesse had many jobs, including managing
12the Kinney shoe store on the square in Springfield and the one
13in Lafayette, Indiana; he moved furniture for a local store,
14worked at a meat plant, and tended bar, all at the same time;
15he also sold cars for Friendly Chevrolet, worked as a common
16laborer, sold life insurance, and collected for All Star
17Music; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Louie Smarjesse's true passion was in hospitality
19and, specifically, bartending; he owned the memorable Supper
20Club, the Sand Bar, and Griff's Tavern and co-owned the Blue
21Moon with his brother Bob; he also managed The Sportsman,
22where he fed the piranhas; he bartended in 23 restaurants and

1bars, including Milano's, the Abe Lincoln Hotel, Mansion View,
2the Governor's Mansion for Governor Walker, Robin Hood,
3Par-a-dice, Village Pump in Indianapolis, Flaming Pit, Don
4Henry's, Harness House, Ideal Lounge, Rosalie's Place, D &
5J's, Dicenso's Black Angus, Ember's, George Rank's, Ben's
6Place, Top of the Arch, Lake Club, Governor Hotel, Oak Crest
7Country Club, John's Lounge, and the Brass Rail; he is best
8known for the many years he worked at Gabatoni's; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Louie Smarjesse had wonderful stories and loved
10to make others happy; he and his wife traveled to Ireland,
11Costa Rica, and most states, and twice enjoyed two-week
12sailing cruises in the Caribbean and weeks on the island of St.
13John; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Louie Smarjesse was preceded in death by his son,
15Paul Smarjesse, and his grandson, Ronald Mohan Jr.; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Louie Smarjesse is survived by his wife of 50
17years, Susan Hummel Smarjesse; his two former wives; his
18children, Mike (Rhonda) Smarjesse, Karen (Charlie) Hitt,
19Patricia (Ramon) Perez, Janet (John Henrikson) Rawlings, Kelly
20(Trevor) Smarjesse-Miller, Anna (Bob Shaver) Neumann, and
21Charly (Nancy Barnick) Smarjesse; his grandchildren, Nick,
22Jake, Mike, Matt, Noah, Ben, and Johnny Smarjesse, Reid Hitt,
23Andy Rawlings, Rachel Hammann, Lindsay Sullivan, Chon Nguyen,

1Tara Carey, Emme Neumann, Bronte Smarjesse, and Hallie Miller;
2and his brother, Bob Smarjesse and his children, Tony
3Smarjesse, Teri Mulvey, and Tami Savage; therefore, be it
 
4    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
5ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
6Louis "Louie" Joseph Smarjesse and extend our sincere
7condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
8him; and be it further
 
9    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10presented to the family of Louie Smarjesse as an expression of
11our deepest sympathy.
