HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate Larry Suffredin on the
4occasion of his retirement as Cook County Commissioner; and
 
5    WHEREAS, During his 20-year tenure as a County
6Commissioner, Commissioner Suffredin sponsored ordinances and
7resolutions that codified county laws for the first time,
8saved the old county hospital building from demolition,
9created the successful Independent Health and Hospital Board,
10gave Cook County an assault weapons ban, raised the minimum
11wage, changed the leadership structure for the Juvenile
12Temporary Detention Center, created an Independent Inspector
13General, and created an Eviction and Mortgage Foreclosures
14Court protocol to protect people's homes; he co-sponsored an
15amendment to the Cook County Human Rights Ordinance redefining
16"source of income" to include all lawful sources of income,
17including housing choice vouchers; and
 
18    WHEREAS, As a forest preserve commissioner, Commissioner
19Suffredin sponsored ordinances and resolutions that required
20children to wear bike helmets, created the Next Century
21Conservation Council, expanded land restoration, encouraged an
22expansion of the Master Stewart program, and expanded the role
23of trained volunteers; and

1    WHEREAS, Commissioner Suffredin wrote by-laws adopted by
2the suburban commissioners that reformed the procedures for
3selecting METRA, PACE, and RTA directors, which led to a Cook
4County resident becoming the METRA chair for the first time;
5and
 
6    WHEREAS, Commissioner Suffredin's leadership and
7collaborative efforts led to bipartisan support from the Cook
8County Board of Commissioners on ethics reform ordinances; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Commissioner Suffredin was also integral in the
102020 redistricting process; therefore, be it
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
12HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
13we congratulate Larry Suffredin on his retirement as Cook
14County Commissioner and wish him the best in all his future
15endeavors; and be it further
 
16    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17presented to Commissioner Suffredin as a symbol of our respect
18and esteem.
