HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to honor milestones in the lives
4of the citizens of the State of Illinois; and
 
5    WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that John A. Canning
6Jr. is stepping down as co-chair of Big Shoulders Fund; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The mission of Big Shoulders Fund is to provide
8support to schools with demonstrated need that provide a
9quality, values-based education in a safe and structured
10environment for deserving children; and
 
11    WHEREAS, John Canning has served as co-chair of Big
12Shoulders Fund for over 25 years and will now continue as a
13trustee and co-chair emeritus; and
 
14    WHEREAS, During his tenure, John Canning has helped raise
15more than $500 million to support students in under-resourced
16communities in Chicago, grown the Big Shoulders Fund network
17into 92 schools covering Chicago and Northwest Indiana, and
18ensured the continued viability of these essential
19community-based organizations; and
 
20    WHEREAS, The Rita and John Canning Scholarship has helped

1thousands of promising and deserving students at Big Shoulders
2Fund schools, and as of 2022, John Canning's Canning Scholars
3have enrolled in college, persisted, and graduated from
4college above national rates; and
 
5    WHEREAS, On countless occasions, John Canning stepped in
6both personally and in his role as co-chair with generous
7financial support to provide pathways to brighter futures for
8students; therefore, be it
 
9    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
10HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
11we congratulate John Canning on his dedication and hard work
12as co-chair of Big Shoulders Fund for the last 25 years and
13wish him continued success in all of his future endeavors; and
14be it further
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to John Canning as a symbol of our respect and
17esteem.
