HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to congratulate Monserrate Diaz on the occasion of her 80th birthday on June 22, 2022; and

WHEREAS, Monserrate Diaz was born to Adelina Roman and Alejandro Diaz in Esperanza, Arecibo, Puerto Rico on June 22, 1942; growing up, she was noted for being highly intelligent, quiet, responsible, humble, cooperative, and a hard worker; and

WHEREAS, Monserrate Diaz attended Escuela Diego Bravo until seventh grade; alongside her family, she moved to Chicago and attended Cooper School until 1958; she entered Our Lady of Bethlehem Convent under the Order of St. Joseph in August 1958; she attended Nazareth Academy during her high school years; she received her Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts from Rosary College; and

WHEREAS, Monserrate Diaz taught third grade at St. Bonaventure Catholic School; she decided to leave the Order of St. Joseph in 1967, returning home; she then decided to go to Puerto Rico, where she worked at Centro Medico for two and a half years; and

WHEREAS, Monserrate Diaz returned to Chicago in 1969; she earned her Master of Arts in Social Work from the University of Chicago; and

WHEREAS, Monserrate Diaz worked for United Charities for one year before serving as a social worker at Tulley High School; and

WHEREAS, Monserrate Diaz was recruited to work with Senator Charles Percy in Washington, D.C., where she served as the social worker community liaison for two years; and

WHEREAS, Monserrate Diaz went to work at the Department of Justice Juvenile Justice Division, and she was responsible for reviewing grants for the department; and

WHEREAS, Monserrate Diaz then worked as a special agent with the Department of Immigration and Naturalization; in addition to her service in the United States, she worked in Rome, Italy, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, and Cuba; and

WHEREAS, Monserrate Diaz married Charles Ramon Rivera on June 11, 1983, and they lived in Arlington, Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Monserrate Diaz worked for the federal government for 30 years; upon her retirement, she moved with her family to Orlando, Florida; and

WHEREAS, Monserrate Diaz has always been a very caring, compassionate, and giving woman, and she is known for always helping her family and strangers in need; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Monserrate Diaz on celebrating her 80th birthday, and we wish her many more happy and healthy years; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Monserrate Diaz as an expression of our esteem and respect.
