HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of
4Marguerite Ann "Marge" (Phillips) Britton of Chicago, who
5passed away on April 8, 2022; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Marge Britton was born in Chicago on July 7,
71937; she lived in the Edgewater neighborhood of Chicago her
8entire life; she attended St. Gregory the Great High School
9and graduated from Mundelein College in 1959, where she
10founded the debate team and worked on the Skyscraper student
11newspaper; she married Harold F. "Hal" Britton on September
1223, 1961; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Marge Britton worked for the Lerner Newspaper and
14then the Skokie News, where she served as the feature editor;
15she also worked in public relations for the Chicago Realtors
16Association; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Marge Britton was a lifelong Democrat; she worked
18and volunteered for a number of political candidates in
19Chicago and across Illinois; she worked for the City of
20Chicago and for multiple elected officials, including
21Alderwoman Marion Volini as her chief of staff and for
22Alderwoman Mary Ann Smith; and

1    WHEREAS, Marge Britton founded the Lakewood Balmoral
2Residents' Council (LRBC) in 1969, where she served as
3president from 1970 to 1972; she then served as a community
4organizer, helping others create their own neighborhood
5groups; she was vice-president of the Edgewater Community
6Council from 1974 to 1985 and was a member of the Publicity
7Club of Chicago; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Marge Britton was affectionately known as
9"Mother" and "Nana" to her family; she was also known as "Mom
10Britton", serving as an honorary mother to hundreds of
11Edgewater children; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Marge Britton was the beloved wife of 53 years of
13the late Harold F. Britton; the loving mother of Cynthia
14(Scott) Tomeczko Britton, Marjorie (Chris) Karabas, Christine
15(Michael) Valadez, John (Elena Chugai) Britton, James (Tanya),
16and the late Joseph Britton; the cherished grandmother of
17Angelina, Molly, Luke, Chloe, Phoebe, Elliott, Cameron,
18Patrick, Sean, and Polina; and the dear sister of the late Hope
19Phillips; therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
21HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
22we mourn the passing of Marguerite Ann "Marge" (Phillips)

1Britton and extend our sincere condolences to her family,
2friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further
 
3    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4presented to the family of Marge Britton as an expression of
5our deepest sympathy.
