HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, March is recognized as National Kidney Month, an
3important opportunity to raise public awareness and
4understanding of rare kidney diseases, such as Apolipoprotein
5L1 (APOL1) mediated kidney disease; and
 
6    WHEREAS, APOL1 genetic variants account for much of the
7excess risk of chronic and end stage kidney disease for
8persons of African ancestry, including people who identify as
9African American, Afro Caribbean, and Latinx; and
 
10    WHEREAS, APOL1 explains the disproportionate rate of
11kidney disease in people of African ancestry; African
12Americans make up 13% of the U.S. population but account for
1332% of all kidney failure and 35% of all end stage kidney
14disease; in addition, African Americans are four times more
15likely to develop kidney failure than white Americans; and
 
16    WHEREAS, APOL1 mediated kidney disease is driven by
17genetic factors and is underdiagnosed; and
 
18    WHEREAS, APOL1 symptoms do not present until kidney damage
19is advanced; symptoms include fatigue, swelling in the legs
20and feet, and weight gain, among others; and

1    WHEREAS, Increasing public awareness and understanding of
2the genetic causes of rare kidney disease could lead to early
3diagnosis and care for some of the most vulnerable populations
4and empower and educate those at risk on how they can manage
5it; therefore, be it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
7HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
8we declare the month of March 2022 as Rare Kidney Disease
9Awareness Month in the State of Illinois.
