HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate the Chicago High School
4for Agriculture Sciences on the occasion of the 175th
5anniversary of the founding of its farm, located at 111th
6Street and Pulaski Road; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The farm, consisting of 129 acres, was purchased
8by the Chicago Board of Education for $79 on December 11, 1846,
9as they forecasted the extension of the city limits to distant
10points where schools would be needed; the land was leased for
11farming, and although the technology used has changed over the
12years, some things do not; the farm, now just under 79 acres
13after sections were sold, still grows corn, still has a market
14garden, and still hosts a farm stand; and
 
15    WHEREAS, The land has not fundamentally changed since
161846, though the community surrounding it certainly has; Mount
17Greenwood was first populated in 1830 but did not experience a
18notable influx of settlers until the 1893 World's Columbian
19Exposition; and
 
20    WHEREAS, In the early 1980s, the Chicago Board of
21Education was considering selling the land to real estate
22developers; the Citizen's Committee to Save Chicago's Last

1Farm was formed, and in response, the board announced a new
2plan in 1983; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Based on a first of its kind successful
4agricultural sciences high school in Philadelphia, the Chicago
5High School for Agriculture Sciences was created in 1985 and
6received more than 500 applications for approximately 150
7freshmen openings; the school was designed to offer college
8preparatory and vocational education, with coursework devoted
9to horticulture, food science, landscape design, and other
10agriculture topics; and
 
11    WHEREAS, To date, the Chicago High School for Agricultural
12Sciences has an enrollment of approximately 800 students, and
13to commemorate the historic 175th anniversary of the school's
14farm, some of the students have created then-and-now photos
15for display; therefore, be it
 
16    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
17HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
18we congratulate the Chicago High School for Agriculture
19Sciences on the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the
20founding of its farm; and be it further
 
21    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
22presented to the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences
