HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Donald E. "Don" Van Cleave, who passed away on September 2, 2021; and

WHEREAS, Don Van Cleave was born in Des Moines, Iowa to Ray and Agnes Van Cleave; he graduated from the University of Iowa and proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War; and

WHEREAS, Don Van Cleave worked for Standard Oil Company for over three decades; and

WHEREAS, Don Van Cleave committed himself to a life of service in retirement; he volunteered with PADS, the Palatine Senior Center, the Palatine Township Food Pantry, Northwest Community Hospital, and many other organizations and charities; and

WHEREAS, One of Don Van Cleave's great joys was serving as the "Banana Man" at the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center in Chicago, where he wheeled a cart of fruit into the rooms of injured soldiers and gave them bananas, an eager ear, and a sympathetic heart to help them in their healing process; and

WHEREAS, Throughout his life, Don Van Cleave enjoyed playing golf, walking through the neighborhood, having a doughnut and coffee with friends, and being around his cherished grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Don Van Cleave was a member of the First United Church, the First United Methodist Men's Group, the Palatine Masonic Lodge, High Twelve, and Eastern Star Chapter #585; and

WHEREAS, Don Van Cleave was preceded in death by his brother, Dick; and

WHEREAS, Don Van Cleave is survived by his beloved wife, Janet Van Cleave; his sister, Marcia; his two sons and their spouses, Aron and Katy Van Cleave and Ryan and Victoria Van Cleave; his wonderful grandchildren, Valerie, Veronica, Sadie, and Liam; and many friends and extended family members; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Donald E. Van Cleave, commend his service to the community, and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Don Van Cleave as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
