HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to congratulate Sharone Mitchell Jr. on being appointed Cook County Public Defender; and

WHEREAS, Sharone Mitchell, prior to becoming the Cook County Public Defender, served as Director of the Illinois Justice Project (April 2014-July 2016), as a Criminal Defense Attorney with the Cook County Public Defender's Office (February 2010-July 2016), and as a Criminal Defense Legal Intern with Cabrini-Green Legal Aid (2007- 2009); and

WHEREAS, Sharone Mitchell, as Director of the Illinois Justice Project, was instrumental in helping to craft the criminal justice reform bill that Gov. JB Pritzker signed into law; he was especially involved in the provision eliminating cash bail in the State; and

WHEREAS, Sharone Mitchell is a lifelong resident of Cook County; he was raised in the West Pullman neighborhood of Chicago and graduated from Morgan Park High School; he received his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and his Juris Doctor from the DePaul University College of Law; and

WHEREAS, Sharone Mitchell has promised to serve as an engine for progressive system change; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Sharone Mitchell Jr. on being appointed Cook County Public Defender and wish him the best in his new role; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Sharone Mitchell as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
