HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Juneteenth recognizes the abolition of slavery in
3the United States and its territories in 1865; and
 
4    WHEREAS, President Lincoln enacted the Emancipation
5Proclamation on January 1, 1863, freeing slaves throughout the
6south, but it was not until June 19, 1865, over two years later
7and over two months after General Robert E. Lee's surrender at
8Appomattox Court House, that slaves in Galveston, Texas
9received the news, making it the official end of slavery; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom from
11bondage and oppression; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Springfield's Juneteenth celebration begins on
13June 17, 2021 with the Levitt AMP Concert on the Y-block; on
14June 18, Juneteenth, Inc. will partner with the Illinois State
15Museum for a special art exhibit centered on Juneteenth titled
16Noir; a patio party at the museum and a rally at the Capitol
17will also be held that day; the Juneteenth Unity Parade and a
18festival at Comer Cox Park will be held June 19; the four-day
19celebration concludes with Fitness in the Park and an Outdoor
20Revival; therefore, be it
 
21    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE

1HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
2we recognize the City of Springfield's Juneteenth celebration
3as a time to reflect and to commemorate the end of slavery; and
4be it further
 
5    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
6presented to the City of Springfield and Juneteenth, Inc. as a
7symbol of our respect and esteem.
