HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Evelyn Alexander of North Chicago, who passed away on May 14, 2021; and

WHEREAS, Evelyn Alexander was born on November 01, 1936; and

WHEREAS, Evelyn Alexander started volunteering in the school cafeteria in 1958 and taught environmental health and emergency preparedness; she also read to the students; some of the children did not have books at home, so she would buy books to read to them; she made herself available any place a volunteer was needed; and

WHEREAS, Evelyn Alexander served as president of the parent-teacher organization while her four children were enrolled; she was elected to the school board, eventually retiring from the board; in recent years, after the State Board of Education assumed oversight, she was appointed to serve on the district's independent authority board; school records indicate that she never missed a meeting the entire time she was on the grade and high school boards; she is the only resident to be appointed and/or elected to every school board district in the history of the City of North Chicago; she never lost a school board election while serving on Grade School District 63 and Grade School District 64, High School District 123, and North Chicago Community Unit District 187; and

WHEREAS, Evelyn Alexander often volunteered as a chaperone for field trips and sports events; she also volunteered with the Foss Park District summer programs held on school playgrounds; early in her career, she worked as a dispatcher with the North Chicago Police Department and was soon promoted to Health Commissioner and Emergency Services Disaster Agency Coordinator; and

WHEREAS, North Elementary school was renamed in her honor as the Evelyn Alexander Elementary School; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Evelyn Alexander and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Evelyn Alexander as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
