HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Sister
4Thomas Leo Monahan, O.P., who passed away on November 13,
52020; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Sr. Thomas Leo was born in Chicago to Roy and
7Kathryn (Devine) Monahan on September 20, 1929; she was
8baptized Kathleen Monahan; she graduated from Amundsen High
9School in Chicago; she received her Bachelor of Philosophy in
10History from Siena Heights University in Adrian, Michigan; she
11earned her Master of Arts in History and her Master of
12Education in Administration/School Supervision from DePaul
13University in Chicago; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Sr. Thomas Leo entered the Convent of the Adrian
15Dominican Sisters in Adrian, Michigan on June 24, 1951, and
16she professed her simple vows on December 28, 1952; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Sr. Thomas Leo ministered in elementary education
18for 61 years in Detroit, Michigan and Toledo, Ohio, in
19addition to Chicago, Mundelein, and Elmhurst; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Sr. Thomas Leo spent 40 years at the Visitation
21School in Elmhurst, where she served as principal for 38

1years; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Sr. Thomas Leo established the Sister Thomas Leo
3Monahan Legacy Fund, providing tuition assistance for families
4seeking a Catholic education at the Visitation School; and
 
5    WHEREAS, For her dedication to the Visitation School and
6the entire Elmhurst community, Sr. Thomas Leo was named 2013's
7Friend of the Children by the Elmhurst Children's Assistance
8Foundation; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Sr. Thomas Leo was respected and loved by her
10students and their families, numbering in the thousands; she
11will be remembered for her kindness, her selfless nature, and
12her special ability to make everyone she met feel comfortable
13and important; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Sr. Thomas Leo lived a life of grace; she
15exemplified a life of devotion and commitment to her faith and
16good works; she deserves our thanks, gratitude, and words that
17say, "Well done, good and faithful servant."; therefore, be it
 
18    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
19HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
20SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we mourn the passing of Sister
21Thomas Leo Monahan, O.P., and extend our sincere condolences

1to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be
2it further
 
3    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4presented to the family of Sr. Thomas Leo as an expression of
5our deepest sympathy.
