SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Merle R. Durnell of East Moline, who passed away on December 16, 2023; and

WHEREAS, Merle Durnell was born to Herbert and Elvyn Wainwright Durnell in Moline on January 26, 1930; he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict; he married Frances Berg at St. Malachy's Catholic Church in Geneseo on June 20, 1953, and she preceded him in death on May 20, 2006; and

WHEREAS, Merle Durnell retired from ALCOA in 1993 after more than 30 years of service; and

WHEREAS, Merle Durnell enjoyed bowling and playing cards; and

WHEREAS, Merle Durnell was devoted to his faith and his family; and

WHEREAS, Merle Durnell was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Herbert "Herb" Durnell; and his sister, Melba Spavin; and

WHEREAS, Merle Durnell is survived by his children, Jay Durnell and Mary (Dan) Carter; his daughter-in-law, Julie Durnell; his grandchildren, Mark (Crystal) Durnell and Amy Berry; and his great-grandchildren, Audri, Tyler, Gabriel, Katelyn, Jacob, and Anna; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Merle R. Durnell and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Merle Durnell as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
