SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to
3recognize Loyola University Chicago, the only Jesuit Catholic
4University in the State of Illinois; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago originally opened its
6doors as St. Ignatius College on September 5, 1870; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago's School of Law opened
8in 1908, admitting both women and men; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago's Stritch School of
10Medicine was founded in 1920; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago, initially having no
12home field for its football team, adopted the nickname
13"Ramblers" for all of its athletic teams in 1926; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago opened Arrupe College,
15an innovative two-year college for Chicago-area students with
16limited financial means, in the fall of 2015; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago additionally includes
18the Parkinson School of Health Sciences and Public Health, the
19Niehoff School of Nursing, the Quinlan School of Business, the

1College of Arts & Sciences, and the Schools of Education,
2Social Work, and Communications; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Today, Loyola University Chicago enrolls more
4than 17,000 students seeking undergraduate, graduate, and
5professional degrees, with 42% of its study body being
6students of color and 98% of its undergraduate students
7receiving grants and/or scholarships; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago had 2,418 students
9receive a Monetary Assistance Program (MAP) grant in 2023,
10more than one-half of all Illinois undergraduates attending
11the university; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago inaugurated Mark C.
13Reed, Ed.D., as its 25th president on November 3, 2022; and
 
14    WHEREAS, President Dr. Reed has been a distinguished
15leader and educator at Jesuit institutions for more than 20
16years, previously serving as president of St. Joseph's
17University in Pennsylvania for seven years and holding several
18leadership positions at Fairfield University in Connecticut
19for 15 years; and
 
20    WHEREAS, President Dr. Reed is a student-centered leader
21committed to being an active participant in the academic,

1spiritual, and social life of Loyola University Chicago; and
 
2    WHEREAS, President Dr. Reed serves as chair of the Council
3of Presidents for the Atlantic 10 Conference, which Loyola
4University Chicago joined in July 2022; he also serves on the
5boards of the American Council on Education, the Association
6of Catholic Colleges and Universities, and the Association of
7Jesuit Colleges and Universities; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago will celebrate its
9153rd anniversary in September 2023; therefore, be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
11ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we recognize Loyola
12University Chicago, the only Jesuit Catholic University in the
13State of Illinois; and be it further
 
14    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15presented to the President of Loyola University Chicago, Mark
16C. Reed, Ed.D., as an expression of our esteem and respect.
